NEW MEDICAL PROCEDURE TO TREAT SEVERE HEARTBURN FEATURED IN LIVE WEBMDTM INTERACTIVE EDUCATIONAL EVENT

Wednesday, July 12, 8:00 PM Eastern Standard Time

MURRAY HILL, NJ, -- July 11, 2000 -- C. R. Bard, Inc. (NYSE-BCR) is delighted to report that Dr. Anthony Starpoli, MD, Director of the Gastrointestinal Reflux Disease (GERD) Unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, will conduct an independent, interactive educational event, "Treatments for Heartburn/GERD" on WebMD, Wednesday, July 12, at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. During the 60-minute live webcast, Dr. Strapoli will answer questions about a new procedure to treat GERD with the Bard EndoCinch device. Though admission to the event is free, participants must first register to become a member of the WebMD Health Community. This event will be held in the Nutritional Health Auditorium, which opens one hour before the event begins. For more details on the event, visit http://my.webmd.com/calendar.

GERD is a chronic digestive condition in which stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, causing severe heartburn. Prolonged exposure to reflux can also lead to ulceration, asthma and strictures and may promote the development of esophageal cancer. Studies suggest that 60 million people have monthly heartburn and approximately 15 million experience the condition on a daily basis. The new Bard EndoCinch system, developed and marketed by C. R. Bard, Inc., received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance on April 5, 2000. Patients with severe heartburn should consult with their physician to discuss their condition and appropriate treatment options.

"The new Endo Luminal Gastroplication procedure provides an effective, minimally invasive option for the treatment of chronic heartburn. The ideal patient for the new treatment is one who experiences reflux-like symptoms at least twice a week and is dependent on medications to treat their GERD," Dr. Starpoli said. Dr. Starpoli is an attending physician at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center of New York and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College.
